Although found most often in older pets, heart conditions can affect pets at any age. Heart disease is usually a life-threatening health issue, but early diagnosis and appropriate therapy can extend your pet’s life. Some forms of heart disease can even be cured.
Dr. Alyssa Pinkos will examine your pet and perform an echocardiogram as part of your pet’s cardiac workup. She may also recommend a blood pressure, Holter monitor, radiographs, or blood work. Dr. Pinkos will work with your general practitioner to ensure a thorough examination is performed.
Symptoms of heart disease include:
- Rapid breathing
- Coughing
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy/tires easily
- Weakness/trouble exercising
- Collapse
If you suspect your pet has heart disease or if they have been referred to a veterinary cardiologist, please see our clinic dates and locations to set up an appointment. In case of a life threatening emergency, please visit your local emergency room.
